I am an artist from Austria and have been building up an archive of newspaper headlines for quite some time. Until now, I have been sorting my data in MS Excel, but this is no longer sufficient. I currently have 5,000 entries archived. However, my goal is to at least double or triple this number, if not more.
Unfortunately, I don't have the resources of a large institution, so the question of cost is very important. I would like to know how much it would cost me to purchase library software or an image database.
(I am not a librarian myself, but I have a librarian to assist me.)
I also have some ideas that may not be covered by this type of software, so here is a brief description:
I need a simple search function for exhibitions (for exhibition visitors) and an advanced search function for myself. When I perform a search query, I should be able to export the results as a PDF with preview images. I also need a function that exports the HR scans to a folder. And: In exhibitions, it should be possible to play the results as a slideshow!
I would like to create data records or import existing data from MS Excel, tag it, link image files (high-resolution scans with 600 dpi, TIF), and display preview images. Ideally, the text in the image files would be OCR-read and automatically inserted as titles. I would like to record the source (which newspaper the headline comes from) and the date of publication, as well as information about the scan quality, font, certain tags/categories, etc. ...
The topic of thesauri is still a huge mystery to me, but would probably be useful.
However, I don't need barcodes, deadline management, e-payment or user logins, connections to networks, reminders, etc.
The software I'm looking for should be able to be used on an iMac and a MacBook, either as a local installation or via the cloud.
One workstation (for me) is planned. We work with macOS systems.
