Program Name: StarOffice Version: 8.0
The office software alternative
Program Description:
StarOffice

StarOffice 8 offers a full-featured office productivity suite that's compatible with Microsoft Office. Powerful and integrated word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing, and database capabilities combined with easy-to-use features and wizards, help you create great documents from greeting cards to household budget spreadsheets.
Features
- Improved Microsoft Office compatibility
Enhanced import and export filters give you seamless word processing, spreadsheet, presentations and support for password-protected Microsoft Word and Excel documents. Your tables, headers, footers, and formatting, even complex Excel formulas and text frames, will all look better.
- OpenDocument is the new default file format
Now StarOffice files are saved by default in an open XML-based format, specified by the OASIS OpenDocument 1.0 schema, for easier file sharing. IBM, Novell, and Red Hat also support OpenDocument. For backward compatibility, you can still open and save files in the StarOffice 6/7 XML-format.
- XForms supported here
A new editor lets you create XML Form documents. That significantly boosts your interoperability with other programs that support the XForms standard, which has emerged to replace traditional HTML Web forms.
- Digital signatures can be applied to documents
A digital signature offers reliable authentication of a document's sender as well as an assurance that the document has not been altered since it was signed. Now your incoming and outgoing StarOffice documents can have this same level of security.
- Have your own resident database wizard
The completely redesigned database wizard helps you to set up new databases (using the included HSQLDB engine) or connect to existing mySQL, ADO, Oracle, ODBC, and JDBC databases. The wizard also helps you create forms, reports, queries, tables, views, and relations.
- The mail merge wizard really delivers
This new wizard makes it easy to merge form letters with address book information for label printing or emails. It's no longer a difficult, time-consuming task.
- Easier to use than ever before
StarOffice 8 sports a new set of interface improvements that make all of the applications easier to learn and use. For example, default toolbar configurations have been simplified and appear only in context, the mail merge wizard has been redesigned, and enhancements have been made for headers, footers, bulleted lists, text and table selection, spreadsheet cell formatting, email attachments, and online help. The result: lower support costs and higher productivity.
- Your native desktop theme applies
StarOffice 8 uses the native objects, themes, and settings of your platform desktop. Whether you're running the Windows XP, Linux, or Solaris operating systems, StarOffice takes on a look and feel similar to your other native applications.
- Migration tools simplify the move
You can use the new Macro Migration Wizard to help you convert Visual Basic macros in Microsoft Word and Excel documents to the StarOffice Basic macro language. It significantly reduces the time and effort needed to convert macros through automatic conversion (where possible) and notes on issues encountered during migration. The analysis reports estimate how long a migration would take and which problems would need to be addressed. For StarOffice 8 Enterprise Edition users, the new Document Analysis Wizard helps you assess the migration issues of your Microsoft Office documents.
- Export your documents to Adobe PDF
Convert your files to the popular PDF format directly from StarOffice. You'll enjoy using the new PDF hyperlinks, table of contents, document outline, document notes, PDF controls, and tags.
- A simpler, more sophisticated software installer
Installer deploys standard code packages to the target platform, and multiple language versions can be installed without having to install language packs separately. That saves a lot of time. And, because StarOffice uses standard code packages ('rpm' packages for Linux OS, 'pkg' packages for Solaris OS, and 'MSI' packages for Windows), you can apply popular management tools to automate installations on networked systems.
- Use DataPilot for advanced data analysis in spreadsheets
DataPilot tables can now include page fields, and result values can be shown in relation to results from other items. Field items can be sorted by their names or result values, hidden manually, or automatically using their result values. Tabular or outline layout mode can be selected for each field, and the Show Details function can add fields to a DataPilot table. DataPilot is now very similar to the Pivot Table feature of Microsoft Excel, thus lowering training and making it easier to import spreadsheets.
- Format Paintbrush keeps you consistent
Now you can copy and paste formatting information from one part of a word processing document to another - simply and easily. Reformatting sections of a document to match another format is now a trivial task.
- Choose your OS and run at full speed
StarOffice 8 is available for Solaris, Linux, and Windows platforms. Support for the awesome Solaris 10 operating system is new, but the Solaris 8 and 9 operating systems are also supported. You can also choose Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, or XP. The Linux OS version is for kernel version 2.2.13 or higher. At the bottom line, being able to use the same, consistent office productivity software across a mixed computing environment minimizes training costs, reduces incompatibilities, and boosts productivity.
