Overview
STATISTICA is a comprehensive, integrated statistical data analysis, graphics,
data base management, and custom application development system featuring a
wide selection of basic and advanced analytic procedures for science,
engineering, business, and data mining applications. The system includes not
only general-purpose statistical and graphics procedures, but also
comprehensive implementations of specialized modules (e.g., for social
scientists, biomedical researchers, or engineers). All modules are available to
the user as part of an integrated package that can be controlled with a
selection of alternative user-interfaces, including comprehensive, Wizard-aided
programming languages that can be used to build custom extensions or to
integrate STATISTICA with other applications or computing environments. One can
hardly imagine a user who would need all statistical and graphics procedures
offered in STATISTICA, however, the experience of many satisfied users of the
package indicates that accessibility of analytic and graphics techniques from
outside ones traditional area (offered by the exceptional
comprehensiveness of STATISTICA) encourages new, creative ways in which one can
verify hypotheses and explore data.
Complete integration with the Windows system
STATISTICA offers comprehensive support for the Windows environment and it
creatively uses the advanced options of the Windows (95 and NT, also where
applicable, compatible with 3.1) system to enhance the performance of the
program and facilitate the user's interaction with the computer. The following
list of features summarizes the major aspects of this integration.
Clipboard (graphics)
STATISTICA offers flexible multi-format graphics Clipboard support with
convenient facilities for on-screen rearrangement of graphic objects, and for
copying/moving them between windows (including options to copy and paste either
specific logical objects, such as free-hand drawings, embedded graphs, or
rectangular graph regions "cut across objects," a variety of options
to control the status of pasted objects, e.g., Paste Replace, locking,
proportions, object mapping mode, etc.), a Clipboard-based, handy Screen
Catcher tool (that can also be used outside STATISTICA); specialized
reconfiguration options useful for producing camera-ready artwork or
high-resolution negatives (see also the section on STATISTICA OLE support).
Simultaneous OLE Client and Server mode
Finally, if you insert STATISTICA's objects into STATISTICA's documents, the
program will act simultaneously as a server and client, and then a variety of
specialized extensions to the OLE mechanism will be available to facilitate
customization of the compound graphics documents. For example, graph mapping
settings can be adjusted and tools are provided to interactively adjust the
sizes of fonts and markers in all graphs inserted into a master graph by
pressing buttons on a toolbar. The Multiple-Graph AutoLayout Wizard can be used
to guide you step by step through the process of creating perfectly aligned
multiple graph displays.
DDE/API
STATISTICA supports the Windows DDE/API interface standards allowing the user
to control STATISTICA from within other Windows programs, such as MS Excel or
MS Visual Basic.
Extended user-interface standards
STATISTICA supports an extended set of Windows user-interface standards (such
as interactively adjustable MicroScrolls for quick value entry, AutoFill block
extensions, variable-speed scrolling, Drag-and-Drop file opening, ToolTips,
floating toolbar docking, and dozens of others). Moreover, where applicable,
STATISTICA makes Windows 95/NT conventions operational even in the Windows 3.1
environment.
Compatibility with Windows DLL procedures
From within the STATISTICA application, you can call external Windows
procedures such as, for example, routines from commercial or public domain
libraries of computational algorithms or other procedures. Those external
procedures can be used to process STATISTICA data or results (STATISTICA BASIC
provides a convenient interface for incorporating other Windows programs into
your custom STATISTICA BASIC programs.).
Statisticas Speed
The STATISTICA system offers unmatched speed of numerical, graphics, and data
base management operations. It includes not only hundreds of numeric processing
(and graphics) speed optimization procedures but also a system of low-level
input/output and memory management optimizations (including a proprietary
screen redraw and "region selection" system which refreshes, redraws,
and highlights complex sets of graphical objects at speeds limited only by the
hardware of the computer (and the drivers), additionally contributing to the
program's overall "responsiveness"). For example, on an
"old" 486/33 computer:
Statisticas Precision
Not only were all computational algorithms of STATISTICA designed to yield
maximum accuracy, but a number of innovative technologies (e.g.,
"quadruple precision") were introduced in most of the low-level
computational engines of the program in order to overcome the limits of
"floating point" math (which are common to many spreadsheet, math,
and statistics programs). As a result, STATISTICA offers an unmatched level of
accuracy and can handle even extreme cases of small relative variance and other
highly demanding benchmarks of numerical precision. Due to the other unique
feature of STATISTICA -- its interactive, user-controlled display formats
supported for all numerical output -- the presentation of numerical results can
be interactively adjusted allowing you to take advantage of the numerical
accuracy delivered by the program.
Graphics facilities in STATISTICA
Graphics facilities in STATISTICA combine an extremely wide selection of
scientific and technical charts (featuring built-in analytic facilities) with
customization, drawing, and multigraphics management capabilities that are
usually found only in designated presentation graphics and drawing programs.
STATISTICA offers hundreds of types of 2- and 3-dimensional graphical displays,
including 2- and 3-dimensional ternary graphs, special 4-dimensional graphs,
multidimensional graphs, categorized multigraphs, matrices of graphs, icons,
tessellations, layered graphs, spectral 2- and 3-dimensional graphs, compound
graphs, and many other specialized procedures. Also, flexible and very easy to
use facilities are provided to custom-design completely new types of graphs and
add them permanently to the menu or floating toolbars.
Selection of data management facilities
STATISTICA includes an integrated, comprehensive data base management system
that provides a selection of unique, specialized facilities designed to manage
data sets for statistical analyses. An extremely large selection of options
(including a spreadsheet of practically unlimited capacity with a full
selection of Drag-and-Drop and AutoFill facilities, comprehensive data
transformation and restructuring options, import/export, and data
verification/cleaning) can easily be supplemented by user-specified procedures
that can be added to the system for repeated use.
Basic statistical exploratory methods
The basic statistical exploratory methods include such techniques as examining
distributions of variables (e.g., to identify highly skewed or non-normal, such
as bi-modal patterns), reviewing large correlation matrices for coefficients
that meet certain thresholds (see example above), or examining multi-way
frequency tables (e.g., "slice by slice"systematically reviewing
combinations of levels of control variables).
Multivariate exploratory techniques
Multivariate exploratory techniques designed specifically to identify patterns
in multivariate (or univariate, such as sequences of measurements) data sets
include: Cluster Analysis, Factor Analysis, Discriminant Function Analysis,
Multidimensional Scaling, Log-linear Analysis, Canonical Correlation, Stepwise
Linear and Nonlinear (e.g., Logit) Regression, Correspondence Analysis, Time
Series Analysis, and Classification Trees.
Programming with STATISTICA BASIC
STATISTICA BASIC is a simple to use but powerful programming language which can
be used for a variety of types of applications ranging from simple data
transformations (e.g., whenever you need to do more than can be done using the
spreadsheet formulas) to building custom, complex, extensions to computational,
graphics, and data management procedures of STATISTICA.
New in Statistica 7
- A simplified user interface
The individually tailored interface allows for more efficient management of
output. "Quick Tabs" allow for quick access to critical results,
while "Advanced Tabs" give users access to more specialized tools and
freedom to further explore and visualize their data.
- Convenient workbooks and reports
Output options have been significantly expanded to include a flexible Workbook
and Reporting functionality capable of efficiently managing practically
unlimited numbers of active, multimedia documents (both STATISTICA native and
ActiveX documents), organized hierarchically and optionally linked together.
- Full Web-enablement options
Both input and output can be handled via the Internet. Users can automatically
publish their output on the Web in easily navigable reports with embedded
objects and instruct STATISTICA, through their browser, to perform specified
analysis and display their output. STATISTICA's computational and data querying
power can be accessed from practically any computer in the world that is
connected to the Web.
- Compatibility/programmability
Built-in, industry standard Visual Basic scripting language allows programmers
to access directly every aspect of the program to automate routine tasks or
develop elaborate custom applications.
- New Stats
General Discriminant Function Analysis, Enhanced Classification and Regression
Trees, Nonlinear Estimation Routines, and Advanced Principal Components and
Classification Analysis have been added to the already comprehensive selection
of statistical techniques.
- Graphics
Enhanced graphics technology with hundreds of new options, an array of fully
automated graphics styles, and advanced support for active compound graphs
gives users more visualization and exploratory functionality. For example, a
new unique "interactive 3D explorer" tool allows users to brush or
zoom precisely selected subsets of data by "slicing" 3D space (with
the mouse).
- Speed
STATISTICA 6 features a new generation of optimizations that improve even the
fast analysis speeds of the previous version (STATISTICA 5) which was one of
the fastest applications available on the market. These optimizations are
especially useful when accessing enterprise databases and analyzing large
amounts of information.
- Unlimited capacity
Virtually all system limitations from previous versions have been removed. For
example, multiple copies of STATISTICA can now run simultaneously, each
processing multiple and concurrently open data files. An unlimited number of
variables can be stored in the new system data files and text values, labels,
variable names and case names can store virtually unlimited number of
characters.
- Optimized access to remote databases
Enterprise versions of STATISTICA feature new technology to efficiently query
and access remote databases of virtually unlimited size without having to
import subsets of these data or create their local copies. This is especially
useful for processing extremely large databases for data mining.
